Mike Smith traveled to the WERA sprint race at Indianapolis Raceway Park circa 1988 hoping to cash in on Suzuki contingency bucks in C Superstock. Unfortunately for Smith, Kevin Rentzell also showed up to chase Yamabucks. During this era the Yamaha FZ600 was superior to the Suzuki GSX600 Katana and despite being at the peak of his form Smith could only manage to race close, but not stay ahead of Rentzell. Rentzell was also one of the top up-and-coming racers of the late 1980s. In addition to being an endurance racing champ with Dutchman Racing, Rentzell blew everyone away by scoring a podium finish in the Daytona 200 in 1989.
