AURORA, Ill. (October 6, 2011) – Feld Motor Sports® announced today that GEICO Honda’s Eli Tomac, of Cortez, Colo., will compete at the inaugural Monster Energy Cup at Las Vegas’ Sam Boyd Stadium on October 15.
The 18-year old made his Western Regional Supercross Lites class debut in 2011 and closed out the season second-overall, just six points shy of the championship. In 2011, Tomac won two races and earned four podium finishes. Proving to be a title contender, Tomac is ready to lay it on the line for the Monster Million.
“Everybody is going to be riding on the edge, especially since there is so much money up for grabs,” said Tomac. “With the hybrid track blending elements from both supercross and motocross, bike set-up is going to be key. It’s going to be so different from any track we currently race on. I’m sure Ricky (Carmichael) and Jeremy’s (McGrath) track design will make for some great racing.”
With $1 million on the line, the Honda rider will be using his experience racing supercross and motocross as a guide to battling the Monster Energy Cup track.
“Anytime you’re on a track with a veteran like Kevin Windham or top guy like Ryan Villopoto, you’re going to learn something new,” said Tomac. “You get to see how they ride a corner or go through a rhythm section and hopefully you learn something from that. It should be a lot of fun and racing against guys like them will make it all that much more exciting.”
The unique hybrid track will consist of supercross/motocross terrain and will have a tremendous motocross-style influence, making it unlike any other stadium race in the world. This track will be the perfect blend of supercross and motocross combined and created into the ultimate battleground. The Monster Energy Cup posts a $250,000, awarding the winner a $100,000 check, and for the “first time ever” $1 Million will be paid to a rider that wins all three main events.
Tickets for the 2011 Monster Energy Cup can be purchased at the Thomas & Mack Center Box Office, UNLVtickets outlets, online at www.UNLVtickets.com, www.MonsterEnergyCup.com, or by phone at (702) 739-FANS. Tickets will be available at the Sam Boyd Stadium Box Office on the day of the event only.

I had the privilege of becoming friends with Ben Campanale during the mid-1990s. Campanale, or Campy as his friends called him, was the first two-time Daytona 200 winner. I called Ben two or three times a year just to catch up and see how he was doing. In return he would occasionally send me photos showing me what he’d been up to. I came across this photo yesterday. It’s Dick Klamfoth (the first three-time Daytona 200 winner) and Campanale at a Laconia reunion in 1999. Campy would always write on his photos to explain the significance of the photos he sent. Note that he even wrote his name on his shirt, I guess just so I’d know who was who. Campy passed away in 2003.
