Arthur Tramontin (No. 17), of Clifton, New Jersey, races his Harley-Davidson Sprint side by side with Atlanta’s William Sowel (No. 126) on a Honda at the 1963 Daytona Lightweight race. It marked the first official Lightweight National and it included expert riders going head to head with amateurs and novices. Dick Hammer won this historic Daytona race on a Harley-Davidson. The Lightweight events eventually morphed into the AMA 250 Grand Prix Series and were officially granted national-championship status in 1977.
AURORA, Ill. (July 29, 2011) – Feld Motor Sports® announced today that Rockstar Energy/Valli Motorsports Yamaha’s Nick Wey, of Dewitt, Mich., will participate at this year’s inaugural Monster Energy Cup race set to take place October 15 at Las Vegas’ Sam Boyd Stadium.
“If there is a million bucks on the line, you can count me in, especially if it’s in Las Vegas,” said Wey. “This is going to be a great event that is new for the riders and fans. With the three-moto format, it’s going to take three good starts and three solid motos to run up front, which is new for everyone.”
After wrapping up his 14th year in supercross, the 30 year-old veteran has three top-five finishes and four top-10 finishes in the Supercross class. Throughout his career in the Supercross Lites class, Wey earned three top-five finishes and a career-best finish of second. Wey began racing professionally in 1997 and a year later started his career in the Supercross Lites class. In 2000, Wey made his official move to the Supercross class to race alongside supercross greats Ricky Carmichael and Jeremy McGrath.
“To have Jeremy McGrath and Ricky Carmichael design the track is a great addition to this race,” said Wey. “From what I’ve heard, the outside part of the track is going to pretty unique, and I am looking forward to the final design.”
Throughout his 2011 Supercross class campaign, Wey finished 10th overall with the help of four top-10 finishes. His best finishes came in Indianapolis and Toronto.
The unique hybrid track will consist of supercross/motocross terrain and will have a tremendous motocross-style influence, making it unlike any other stadium race in the world. This track will be the perfect blend of supercross and motocross combined and created into the ultimate battleground. The Monster Energy Cup posts a $250,000 purse with the winner walking away with a $100,000 check, and for the “first time ever” $1 Million will be paid to a rider that wins all three main events.
Tickets for the 2011 Monster Energy Cup can be purchased at the Thomas & Mack Center Box Office, UNLVtickets outlets, online at www.UNLVtickets.com, www.MonsterEnergyCup.com, or by phone at (702) 739-FANS. Tickets will be available at the Sam Boyd Stadium Box Office on the day of the event only.
